Understanding Adult Museum Visitors' Expectations for the Children During a Visit to the U.S. Capitol, Capitol Visitor Center

2009 - 2010

Project Purpose:
Clarify parents' expected outcomes for their children's CVC visit; determine how family-oriented experiences support those expectations.  Clarify how and why families use the Capitol as a concrete learning opportunity.

Project Conclusion:
Parents want their children provided with an opportunity to: increase/reinforce knowledge, encourage civic awareness, promote respect for the American system of government, and be aware of the intangible grandeur of the building. Parents want their children to see live activity supporting current Congressional work, as well as for the CVC to include child-friendly content and content delivery methods.

Project Relevance:
Visitors use the Capitol as a concrete learning opportunity to see for themselves--and show their children--where American government takes place. Visitors expect to see the process and not just the results of the process.
